What we like about Vimeo?

We like Vimeo because it is saved the progress what we have done over the years. Some are funny and some are just plain good. Most are embarassing as people mess up but thats what we like about our videos!

The most funniest moment was when we were on the tube in London. When Mrs Murray  was going on to the tube the doors shut as quick as lightning! with Mrs Murray dealing with 5 pupils all by her self!. This is one of the best videos on vimeo for me. I really like Vimeo  because it is really easy to transfer videos from the iPad iPod and much more. Here is one more Video from our beautiful Vimeo site. It will be showing you all about Year 3s wonderful trip to the rich Chester!

Using our   Video channel is also great because we get to see what pupils in all of the classes are doing. Before we had the video channel we’d not really find out how good other classes were – now we can see them having a great time!

History of Computers

This would be biger than your room

Today we all have a computers for most things! Its amazing really, but the computer has been around for longer than you think.

The first computer ever made was bigger than your room. It had over one million wire’s inside! So do you think your computer’s old?

It was 1939, John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry developed the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) at Iowa State University, which was regarded as the first electronic digital computer. The ABC was built by hand and the design used over 300 Vacuum Tubes and had capacitors fixed in a mechanically rotating drum for memory.

The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), was constructed in the US in 1943. It was the first really useful general-purpose computer. It was a turning point in the history of computing and was used to perform calculations and used 160 kW of power.

World War II is known to be the driving force of computing hardware development and one of such use of computers was in communications encryption and decryption. The most famous of these was the Enigma machine which broke German codes.

And in 1962 the first computer game was made, (YAY!).

The microprocessor eventually led to the development of the microcomputer during the 70′s and 80′s.

These were small, low-cost computers that individuals and small businesses could afford.

In 1985 Microsoft and Apple started a long battle over who made the best computers and software.

By the 1990s, the microcomputer or Personal Computer (PC) became a common household appliance, and became even more widespread with the advent of the Internet. Did you know that the mouse is called the mouse because of the wire coming out ofthe back.

Sir Timothy John “Tim” Berners-Lee is an English computer scientist known as the inventor of the World Wide Web as we know it today. He made a proposal for an information management system in 1989, and on 25 December 1990, with the help of Robert Cailliau and another young student, he carried out the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet.

If the Internet was not here what would we be talking on? We use the internet for lots of things today.

Now you know all about computers and now you are ready for the internet.

Minecraft – Screw the Nether

Some of the OLV Media team are big fans of Minecraft. In this post they briefly describe Minecraft and review a Minecraft inspired version of Moves like Jagger.

Minecraft is an online game. You can use building blocks to build an imaginary world. You have to be careful though. At nighttime monsters appear in your world. You have to make sure you’ve built some good shelters to keep your world safe!

This video shows you how the game works:

Minecraft has inspired lots of users to create songs based on their world. They often copy well known songs. At the moment one of the most popular ones is a copy of Moves like Jagger.

The lyrics are below:
It’s deep underground
Past the bedrock But don’t dig straight down You’ll regret that.
But now you feel brave,
Equipped with your spade To roam in these caves.
Not looking for gold;
This stuff’s purple, or so I’ve been told by some people.
I’ll find a few bricks,
Where the two of these mix – with a couple of clicks.

(I’ll be swingin’ my pick)

This is all the prep that I go through,

Even if my tools are just make-do.

Moving to the Nether,

I’m moving to the Nether, I’m moving to the Nether…

Ten blocks is the magical total,
‘Cause that’s enough to build up my portal.

Moving to the Nether.

I’m moving to the Nether. I’m moving to the Nether…
Welcome to Hell,
Weather’s great here! So, put up a chair, have a cold beer!
You can live by the sea;
So happy you’ll be; With your cobblestone tree.

Oh!

The neighbors aren’t right,
They’re delicious! We eat bacon all night,It’s nutritious!
Hear all of them squeal,
For the damage I deal, There’s plenty to steal.
(Hack and slash)

(Gold nuggets? I’m rich!)

Who cares if we’re giving up sunlight?

Glowstone’s all we need To keep things bright.

Down here in the Nether,

We love it in the Nether,You’ll love it in the Nether.

Don’t expect to see any creepers;

That’s one of my favorite features!

Down here in the Nether,

We love it in the Nether,You’ll love it in the Nether.

You’ve gotta know

You have to fight, Learn to play, there’s mobs but it’s not night.

A wooden sword won’t do it;

They’re gonna blast right through it!If you got a potion, use it!

So watch your back,

I wont warn you twice!Fight the Ghast;

Ooooooooh!

Make me cry!

They’ll shoot the ground around you

Making holes to fall through, You know you’re probably gonn-ooh

Fall In And Die.

(In the lava again!)

Feels like hell the things I’ve just been through

Won’t believe a word when I tell you

You know what, screw the Nether,

You know what, screw the Nether,You know what, screw the Nether!

Can’t believe I lost my new gear too,

Think I’d better come and rejoin you,

You know what, screw the Nether,

You know what, screw the Nether,You know what, screw the Nether!

“That’s it!I’m sick of this place! It sucks! It’s too hot,It never rains,I’m sweaty,All my clothes are dirty, filthy and on fire!

I’m absolutely sick of this place! Ah, Uhm, I-I miss nature, all the pigs, the cows, and all of that, the sheep ‘n’ stuff. I didn’t think I’d miss it, but I do. Oh my god! How sad, I wish, I wish I could just return to the normal world again…..

Subway Lite

Subway Lite is a free app for iPhones and iPads. It uses a map similar to the one used for the Underground and challenges the player to allow the ‘train’ to get to the final destination in a certain number of stops.

The first few levels of the game are quite easy. However it gets pretty challenging as you move through the game. Watch the video above to see the game being played.

You can download the free version of this app from iTunes.

Brain Toot

Brain Toot is a challenging quiz app. It includes maths problems, memory tasks and follow the ball challenges.

Brain Toot from OLV TV TEAM on Vimeo.

We think this app is good for pupils in Key Stage 2. It might be a bit to hard for younger children! You get a higher score if you get things right in a fast time which is a good way of encouraging you to practice your sums!

The free version of this app can be downloaded from iTunes.

Ballonimals

Balloonimals is a fun app for the iPad, iPhone or iPod.

The app requires you to blow on the iPod / phone to ‘blow up’ balloons. You then shake the iPod to twist and turn the balloon – resulting in some really funny balloon animals! See it in action in the video below:

Ballonimals from OLV TV TEAM on Vimeo.

We think this app would be suitable for children of any age. It’s very good fun and we really enjoyed it!

You can download Balloonimals for free from iTunes.

Kids Money Review

Kids Money is an app designed to help younger children manage their money.

Its like a calculator that will work out how long it will take to save up for something you want. It asks you to enter how much you want to save up; your weekly spending money and the amount that you expect to get as presents. The app then tells you how many weeks it will take to save that amount.

We think it’s pretty useful for younger children and that it would be a handy way of double checking your maths!

Kids Money is a free app. You can find it here.
