Year 5 ICT and History Project on Victorian Keighley

Year 5 have begun a project on Victorian Keighley.

Year 5 pupils are starting a project on Victorian Keighley. They are using copies of documents, photographs, maps and original objects from the time as part of this project.

They will learn what it was like to be a child in Keighley during Victorian times and find out what  the local area was like between 1837 and 1901.

When the weather is a bit better the class will go on a history walk around the area. Mr Devlin and Mr Moorhouse will take them into town and back and talk to the class about lots of Victorian buildings that we can still see.

Last year we went on this walk. There are Victorian postboxes, a Victorian Cemetery  remains of a Victorian Slum and lots of mills and factories from the Victorian period very close to school. There was also a hospital and a reservoir near Our Lady of Victories that Year 5 will learn about in their project.

Here are some photographs from last years History trail.

Year 5 visited by Keighley’s Firemen

23/11/12 Year 5 had some special guest. They were from Keighley fire station. Two men from the Keighley fire crew came to tell them about safety.

Letitia interviewed Keegan and Aaron about the visit, this is what they said.

Aaron: I got to wear the uniform it was really warm and heavy. I almost coudn’t walk! They also said that if you have a fire cover the gaps in your door so smoke can’t get in. It’s important you do this because smoke can kill you.

Keegan: As its coming up to Christmas people start putting there decorations up and that might include lights on there Christmas tree. It’s important you turn them off because it can cause a large fire.

London Year 5

On Tuesday 12th June, year 5 went to London. They went to see lots of different icons and they thought it was a great opportunity to see our capital city.

They went on the London Eye and they saw Big Ben, The monument, Nelson’s column, Traitors gate, and lots more. They said it was a fab trip and they wish they could go again. In London there were lots of different people from other countrys and different schools there. Also in London they met Mrs. Murray-Flutter’s husband who used to work in the Tower of London. They thought the highlight of the day was the London Eye and their Mcdonalds at the end of the day!

When we stopped off at sheffield we got another train back to Keighley and when they got home they were all very tired from the excellent day they had. They were so tired Mr. Devlin let them have half a day off school… How unfair!

We interviewed pupils from OLVRadio whilst they were on The London Eye. Watch the video below to see and hear what they thought of the trip.
